Ste, Adie and I went out with Ron (and Karen) on Saturday, parking at the lower carpark on Cairn Gorm and walking across into the Lairig Ghru to learn some rope work and snow belays over the cornices and have a general play.
Karen had to go back to work for Monday but the rest of us headed out on Sunday from the Rothiemurchus Lodge up the Lairig Ghru to dig ourselves a snowhole. The GPS location is from near the snowhole, but I couldn’t get enough 3G to do a blog update at the time.
It was a bit grey and overcast, but cleared up in the evening and the sky was crystal clear and full of stars. I think i also spotted Mars (and Saturn?). It was clear enough to make out the Orion Nebula and even the Seven Sisters.
Monday morning was bright blue sky and sunshine, and a crisp frost made for much easier walking as there was an ice crust on the deep snow that we’d been wading through the day before. We went for a walk further up the Lairig Ghru to the crags with some great waterfalls that people like to go ice climbing on (Ron is a bit of a fan, so we took him to see them!), before heading back down to pick up the packs and back out of the hills.
Many thanks to Ron for a great 3 days, and thanks also to Mark for the sleeping bag loan!
Mark and Blanka – have a great time with Ron next week!
